**How we know**

Every figure here is as gob.ec publishes it, checked 18 August 2026. Where a number is our own arithmetic rather than a printed figure, the row says so.

## What to know before you apply

Confirmed live — the foreign ministry's temporary-residence index lists the nomad category among current visas. Access caveat: the gob.ec host refused all direct connections from our network, so the procedure page was read through a translation proxy of that exact official URL. Not verified: the 2026 SBU value (so no dollar conversion), processing times, tax treatment, and whether dependants can be included.

## What it means for your tax days

A visa is permission to stay; tax residency follows the days. Ecuador treats you as tax resident once you are present 183 days Ley de Régimen Tributario Interno article 4.1: an individual is an Ecuadorian tax resident when '(a) su permanencia en el país, incluyendo ausencias esporádicas sea de ciento ochenta y tres (183) días calendario o más, consecutivos o no, en el mismo periodo fiscal' — 183 calendar days or more, consecutive or not, including sporadic absences, in the same fiscal period; or '(b) ... en un lapso de doce meses dentro de dos periodos fiscales' — 183 calendar days or more within a 12-month span falling across two fiscal periods, unless the person proves tax residence for the corresponding period in another jurisdiction where the main nucleus of their activities or economic interests is located, in which case residence in Ecuador is otherwise presumed., and residents are taxed on worldwide income. Days are not the only test: Article 4.1(c): residency also arises where the main nucleus of the person's activities or economic interests is in Ecuador, directly or indirectly. That nucleus is in Ecuador where, in the last twelve months, the person obtained the greatest value of income compared with any other country (valued at the period's average exchange rate), or where the greatest value of their assets is in Ecuador. It is presumed where a person holds, directly or indirectly, Ecuadorian assets — including capital rights in resident companies or permanent establishments — worth more than USD 1 million, and at any time before or during the relevant fiscal year has been an Ecuadorian tax resident, has held Ecuadorian nationality or permanent residence, or has acted as legal representative or attorney of a resident company or Ecuadorian permanent establishment of a non-resident company. Anti-avoidance: a person claiming residence in a tax haven or lower-taxation jurisdiction must prove at least 183 calendar days there in the relevant period and that their main nucleus is there; an Ecuadorian tax resident who later claims residence in a tax haven or preferential regime keeps Ecuadorian residency for the four following fiscal periods unless they prove otherwise.
