**How we know**

Every figure here is as island.is publishes it, checked 18 August 2026. Where a number is our own arithmetic rather than a printed figure, the row says so.

## What to know before you apply

Verified from the primary legal texts rather than a guidance page, because the Directorate of Immigration's former public page for this visa no longer exists: utl.is now redirects wholesale to island.is/s/utlendingastofnun, the previously indexed island.is/en/get-a-long-term-visa returns 404, and neither the agency's current application-forms list nor its fee schedule mentions the remote-work long-term visa. The legal basis is nonetheless in force in the consolidated texts checked today: Art. 21 of the Act on Foreigners No 80/2016 (long-term visa, maximum 180 days) and Art. 5 a of Regulation No 540/2017 as amended by Reg. 1048/2020 and 818/2022 (remote work, the ISK 1,000,000/1,300,000 tests). Separately, new rules in force from 8 July 2026 created a short-term residence permit (skammtímadvalarleyfi) for stays of 90-180 days, but the Directorate's announcement limits it to visits to close family members and to artists, scientists and athletes - it is not a remote-work route. Because no current agency guidance page could be found, applicants should confirm the procedure with Útlendingastofnun directly.

## What it means for your tax days

A visa is permission to stay; tax residency follows the days. Iceland treats you as tax resident once you are present 183 days More than 183 days in aggregate in any 12-month period, including normal absences from the country for holidays and the like, and residents are taxed on worldwide income. Days are not the only test: Article 1 of Act No. 90/2003 on income tax imposes unlimited tax liability on, among others: people domiciled in Iceland; people who were domiciled in Iceland but moved away and gave up their domicile, unless they prove they are taxable in another state in the same way as people domiciled there and have met those obligations — this continues for three years from the turn of the year following the date of departure; people who stay in Iceland for more than 183 days in aggregate in any 12-month period, including normal absences for holidays and the like; and people not caught by the previous points who work in aggregate for more than 183 days in any 12-month period aboard an aircraft or ship registered in Iceland. The Director of Internal Revenue (ríkisskattstjóri) decides who is domiciled in Iceland, applying the rules of the Act on Legal Domicile and Residence.
