## What to know before you apply

Norway has no digital nomad or remote-work visa. The two routes commonly presented as one are both something else. (1) The residence permit for self-employed persons (UDI guideline UDI 2014-009, legal basis Immigration Act s. 25 and Immigration Regulations s. 6-18) requires the applicant to hold skilled-worker qualifications (vocational training equivalent to at least three years of upper secondary education, a craft certificate, university education, or documented special qualifications from long work experience) and to run a business established IN Norway; the permit is tied to that specific enterprise in a named county, is granted for one year at a time and is renewable, and forms a basis for family immigration. The guideline sets no fixed NOK income figure - the test is that the person must be assumed capable of supporting themselves on the income from the business. Working only for clients abroad is not what this permit is for. (2) Svalbard is not a nomad visa either: the Norwegian Immigration Act does not apply to the archipelago, so no visa or work and residence permit is needed from Norwegian authorities to travel there, but Svalbard is reached in practice via mainland Norway, so anyone who needs a Schengen visa still needs one for the transit; and residence on Svalbard requires having the means to support yourself, with the Governor empowered to reject or expel people who do not, under the regulations on rejection and expulsion of persons from Svalbard. NOT VERIFIED: the self-employed permit fee and processing time, and the exact Svalbard means-of-support test, neither of which was stated on the official pages reached.

## What it means for your tax days

A visa is permission to stay; tax residency follows the days. Norway treats you as tax resident once you are present 183 days More than 183 days in Norway in any 12-month period, OR more than 270 days in any 36-month period, counting one or more separate stays; residence takes effect in the income year in which the relevant day count is exceeded, and residents are taxed on worldwide income. Days are not the only test: Skatteloven §2-1: anyone resident in the realm (bosatt i riket) is liable to tax. A person who stays in Norway for more than 183 days in any 12-month period, or more than 270 days in any 36-month period, is treated as resident, but only from the income year in which the day count is exceeded; the 270-day rule does not apply to people resident on Svalbard. Ceasing residence: for a person taking up permanent residence abroad, residence ends for the income year in which it is shown that they have not stayed in Norway for more than 61 days in the income year and that neither they nor their close family have had a dwelling available in Norway — and residence never ends before the dwelling ceases to be available. For a person who was resident in Norway for at least ten years before the year of moving abroad, residence ends only after the third income year following the move, and only if for each of those three years the 61-day and no-dwelling conditions are met. Close family means spouse, cohabitant or minor children; having a dwelling available means owning, renting or otherwise having the right to use one. **How does Stretch help with the Norway stay?**

Log the day you land and Stretch counts the days against the permission you are on, shows the date you must be out, and reminds you at 14, 7, 3 and 1 days. It also tallies the days that count towards tax residency, so the 183-day question answers itself. The counting and the alerts are free, forever.
