## What to know before you apply

Vietnam has no dedicated digital-nomad or remote-work visa. The Vietnam Immigration Department portal lists its services as "E-visa issuance; E-transaction applying for visa at oversea Vietnamese representative offices and Checkpoints; Declare temporary residence for foreigners; ABTC issuance; Passports issuance for Vietnamese nationals" — there is no nomad category, and a search of the official evisa.gov.vn application system for "nomad" returns zero occurrences. CLOSEST ROUTES. (1) The e-visa is what remote workers actually use: "Vietnam e-Visa is valid for maximum of 90 days, single or multiple entry", open to holders of passports not excluded under Clauses 1, 2, 3 and 4 of Article 8 of the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit and Residence of Foreigners in Vietnam. Official fee: "Visa is valid once 25 USD / Visa is valid multiple times 50 USD", paid through the portal's e-payment gateway and "non-refundable in case the visa is not granted". Holders "must enter and exit Vietnam through international border gates designated by the Government". The 90-day multiple-entry expansion took effect 15 August 2023. It is a visitor visa and does not confer a right to work for a Vietnamese entity; remote work is not listed as a purpose of entry. (2) The DN business visa exists under the same Law but requires a sponsoring Vietnamese entity; no official page publishing its maximum duration could be opened, so no figure is stated. (3) The Temporary Residence Card is referenced on the official e-visa portal but requires a sponsoring employer or investment and is not available on the basis of foreign remote work; its duration is likewise unverified and left unstated. 2025-2026 DEVELOPMENTS: a 10-year "golden visa" and related long-stay categories were proposed in 2025 (a Vietnam Tourism Advisory Board proposal and a Ministry of Public Security draft decree). No evidence of enactment was found. The only source we could open that addresses legal status describes the golden visa as a proposal with no specific legal instrument, decree number or enactment date, and the long-term-resident categories as a draft decree under review — and that source is secondary. Reported claims of a five-year "talent visa exemption card" launched in August 2025 could not be verified against any official Vietnamese source and should not be treated as fact. SOURCING CAVEAT: several Vietnamese government domains (xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn, thithucdientu.gov.vn, vbpl.vn, vanban.chinhphu.vn) failed TLS verification, timed out or were unsearchable, so a 2026 instrument we did not see cannot be positively excluded; the e-visa figures above were read from the official evisa.gov.vn system's own served content.

## What it means for your tax days

A visa is permission to stay; tax residency follows the days. Vietnam treats you as tax resident once you are present 183 days 183 days or more present in Vietnam in one calendar year, OR in 12 consecutive months counted from the first day of presence in Vietnam. Arrival day and departure day each count as one day; entry and exit on the same day counts as one day., and residents are taxed on worldwide income. Days are not the only test: Article 2 of Personal Income Tax Law No. 109/2025/QH15: a resident individual is one who meets either of two conditions — (a) present in Vietnam for 183 days or more in one calendar year or across 12 consecutive months from the first day of presence; or (b) having a REGULAR PLACE OF RESIDENCE in Vietnam, being either a registered permanent residence or a leased dwelling in Vietnam under a fixed-term lease. Decree 253/2026/NĐ-CP Article 4(2)(b) supplies the threshold for the lease limb: leases totalling 183 days or more in the tax year, including where the individual rents in several places, and including hotels, guesthouses, hostels, workplace accommodation and office premises, whether rented by the individual or by the employer. FIRST-PERIOD RULE: where an individual is present fewer than 183 days in the calendar year but 183 days or more across the rolling 12 months, the first tax period is that 12-month window; from the second year it reverts to the calendar year. **Does a digital nomad visa in Vietnam make you tax resident?**

Not by itself — but staying does. Vietnam treats you as tax resident once you are there 183 days 183 days or more present in Vietnam in one calendar year, OR in 12 consecutive months counted from the first day of presence in Vietnam. Arrival day and departure day each count as one day; entry and exit on the same day counts as one day., and residents are taxed on worldwide income. **How does Stretch help with the Vietnam stay?**

Log the day you land and Stretch counts the days against the permission you are on, shows the date you must be out, and reminds you at 14, 7, 3 and 1 days. It also tallies the days that count towards tax residency, so the 183-day question answers itself. The counting and the alerts are free, forever.
