# How many days make you tax resident in Cayman Islands?

> How Cayman Islands decides tax residency: the residence tests, the tax year, the tests that catch you regardless of days, and Cayman Islands Government — there is no income tax authority; the Department for International Tax Cooperation (DITC) is 'responsible for administering all of the Cayman Islands' legal frameworks for international cooperation in tax matters, and for carrying out the functions of the Tax Information Authority, the Cayman Islands competent authority''s own page — checked 2026-08-18.

**How we know**

Figures are as Cayman Islands Government — there is no income tax authority; the Department for International Tax Cooperation (DITC) is 'responsible for administering all of the Cayman Islands' legal frameworks for international cooperation in tax matters, and for carrying out the functions of the Tax Information Authority, the Cayman Islands competent authority' publishes them at ditc.ky, checked 18 August 2026.

## How the counting works

SOURCING CAVEAT: the official Cayman pages we reached (gov.ky, gov.ky/working, gov.ky/living, gov.ky/immigration, dci.gov.ky and ditc.ky) confirm the government's structure and the DITC's remit but none of them contains an explicit statement that there is no personal income tax — the 'no income or withholding taxes' quotation is from PwC (secondary). The old exploregov.ky business portal now redirects to an unrelated public-health page. The Cayman Islands raises revenue through import duty, work permit fees, tourism accommodation tax and stamp duty on property rather than direct taxation; there is no income, capital gains, payroll, property, corporate or withholding tax on individuals. Practical consequence for a nomad: with no income tax there is no Cayman tax-residency certificate in the usual treaty sense, so your exposure is governed entirely by your home country's rules on ceasing residence. CRS and FATCA reporting still apply to accounts held in Cayman, and the DITC is the competent authority for them.

## Why the day count is the part you can control

Ties, homes and intentions are argued after the fact; days are a record. That is why the first thing an adviser asks for is a list of the days you were in the country — and why reconstructing it from boarding passes and photos a year later is a bad afternoon. Log each stay as it happens and the tally is simply there, with the dates that produced it. If you are moving to Cayman Islands to work remotely, the [Cayman Islands digital nomad visa page](https://doastretch.com/nomad-visa/cayman-islands/) covers the permission side.

## Questions people ask about Cayman Islands tax residency

**How many days can you spend in Cayman Islands before becoming tax resident?**

Cayman Islands does not decide residency on a single day count. The tests are set out by the tax authority on the page linked below. Count your days anyway — they are evidence, and other countries' tests use them.

**When is Cayman Islands's tax year?**

See Cayman Islands Government — there is no income tax authority; the Department for International Tax Cooperation (DITC) is 'responsible for administering all of the Cayman Islands' legal frameworks for international cooperation in tax matters, and for carrying out the functions of the Tax Information Authority, the Cayman Islands competent authority''s page linked below; the tax year sets the window your days are counted in.

**Are residents of Cayman Islands taxed on worldwide income?**

Not in the usual way: Cayman Islands taxes on a territorial basis, so foreign-source income may fall outside the net. Cayman previously ran the Global Citizen Concierge Programme (GCCP), a two-year remote-work certificate with a minimum annual income requirement. WE COULD NOT CONFIRM THAT IT IS STILL OPEN IN 2026: globalcitizen.ky and www.globalcitizen.ky returned DNS 'not found' on 2026-08-18, and none of the gov.ky pages we read (including gov.ky/working and gov.ky/immigration) mention any remote-worker or Global Citizen certificate. Its status should be treated as unconfirmed and re-checked before publication; no income requirement or fee is recorded here because we verified none. Confirm your own position with the authority or an adviser.
