## How the counting works

Day-counting convention as published in art. 16 CIRS: a day of presence is 'any day, complete or partial, that includes an overnight stay' in Portuguese territory. Residence starts on the first day of the period of presence, except where the person was resident on any day of the previous year, in which case from the first day of the year; it ends on the last day of presence, subject to the exceptions in arts. 14 and 16. Worldwide taxation of residents rests on art. 15 CIRS, which was not separately retrieved in this run. The IFICI page states the 20% rate applies to income from the listed qualifying activities; the treatment of foreign-source income is not addressed on that page.

## Why the day count is the part you can control

Ties, homes and intentions are argued after the fact; days are a record. That is why the first thing an adviser asks for is a list of the days you were in the country — and why reconstructing it from boarding passes and photos a year later is a bad afternoon. Log each stay as it happens and the tally is simply there, with the dates that produced it. If you are moving to Portugal to work remotely, the [Portugal digital nomad visa page](https://doastretch.com/nomad-visa/portugal/) covers the permission side.
