What to know before you apply
Australia has no dedicated digital nomad or remote-work visa; the Department of Home Affairs visa listing contains no such subclass. CLOSEST ROUTES, with charges retrieved from Home Affairs' own pricing service. (1) WORKING HOLIDAY, subclass 417 — 12 months, base visa application charge AUD840.00, "Must be 18 to 30 years old (or 35 years old for some countries)", "Must have a passport from an eligible country or jurisdiction", "Must not be accompanied by dependent children". Age 18-35 applies to Canada, Republic of Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Republic of Ireland, Italy, Republic of Korea and the UK; 18-30 to Belgium, Estonia, Hong Kong SAR, Japan, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Taiwan. "You can do any kind of work on this visa. Usually, you can only work for the same employer for 6 months", and "You can study for up to 4 months (17 weeks)." Not extendable in place, though second and third Working Holiday visas exist via three months of specified work. (2) WORK AND HOLIDAY, subclass 462 — 12 months, AUD840.00, "Must be 18 to 30 years old (inclusive)", 30 eligible passport countries, annual country caps, and a ballot for China, India and Vietnam passport holders. (3) VISITOR, subclass 600, tourist stream — "Up to 12 months" but "Generally, we grant a stay period of 3 months. We might grant a stay of up to 12 months in certain circumstances"; AUD250.00 applied from outside Australia, AUD630.00 from inside. Both 417 and 462 require settlement funds rather than income: "This is usually about AUD5,000 for your initial stay, plus the fare to where you are going after leaving Australia." ON REMOTE WORK SPECIFICALLY: no Home Affairs page carving out an exception for work performed remotely for an overseas employer could be found. The subclass 600 tourist stream page states plainly "You can't work", and that is recorded as the published position rather than inferring a carve-out — this is the opposite of New Zealand's explicit 2025 allowance. Tax note for the working holiday routes: "You must pay taxes when you work in Australia on this visa." Also note the interaction rule: "The total time you will be permitted to stay on your first Working Holiday visa and then a Visitor visa is 12 consecutive months." From 1 July 2026 a lower visa cost applies to eligible Pacific Island and Timor-Leste citizens.
What it means for your tax days
A visa is permission to stay; tax residency follows the days. Australia treats you as tax resident once you are present 183 days Actually present in Australia for more than half the income year, whether continuously or with breaks, and residents are taxed on worldwide income. Days are not the only test: The PRIMARY test is the 'resides test' (ordinary concepts) — if you reside in Australia you are a resident and no other test need be applied; factors include physical presence, intention and purpose, family, business or employment ties, maintenance and location of assets, and social and living arrangements. If the resides test is not satisfied, three STATUTORY tests apply: (1) the DOMICILE test — resident if your domicile (permanent home by law) is in Australia, unless the Commissioner is satisfied your permanent place of abode is outside Australia; (2) the 183-DAY test — resident if present in Australia for more than half the income year, unless it is established that your usual place of abode is outside Australia and you have no intention of taking up residence here; (3) the COMMONWEALTH SUPERANNUATION test — Australian Government employees at overseas posts who are contributing members of the CSS or PSS (not the PSSAP) are residents regardless of any other factor, as are their spouse and children under 16. The full tests and the official source are on our Australia tax-day page.

How does Stretch help with the Australia stay?
Log the day you land and Stretch counts the days against the permission you are on, shows the date you must be out, and reminds you at 14, 7, 3 and 1 days. It also tallies the days that count towards tax residency, so the 183-day question answers itself. The counting and the alerts are free, forever.
