What to know before you apply
Legal basis is Resolução CNIg nº 45 of 9 September 2021 (the Lisbon consulate's page miscites it as 45/2022 — a typo on an official page). UNRESOLVED CONFLICT between official pages: Istanbul and others say you must register with the Federal Police within 30 days of entry; Lisbon and Helsinki say 90 days. Register as early as you can and confirm with the issuing post. Whether family or dependants may accompany is NOT stated on any official page read, so nothing is claimed.
What it means for your tax days
None of the official mission pages read addresses taxation, and the Receita Federal was not consulted — the visa carries no published tax exemption and no tax claim is made here. A visa is permission to stay; tax residency follows the days. Brazil treats you as tax resident once you are present 183 days For a foreign national who enters Brazil on a temporary visa without an employment relationship, residency begins on completing '184 dias, consecutivos ou não, de permanência no Brasil, dentro de um período de até doze meses' — that is, on the 184th day, having exceeded 183 days, consecutive or not, within a period of up to 12 months. A person on a temporary visa who stays 'até 183 dias, consecutivos ou não, em um período de até 12 meses' remains a non-resident., and residents are taxed on worldwide income. Days are not the only test: Residency does NOT always wait for the day count. Receita Federal treats a person as resident from the date of arrival if they 'ingresse no Brasil com visto permanente, na data da chegada' (enter Brazil on a permanent visa) or enter on a temporary visa to take up employment ('na data da chegada'). Also resident: anyone who resides permanently in Brazil; a returning former resident who comes back with definitive intent; Brazilians working abroad for Brazilian government entities; and a person who leaves temporarily without filing the exit notification, for the first 12 months. A person becomes non-resident by leaving Brazil permanently and filing the exit notification, or, absent that notification, after 12 consecutive months of absence. The full tests and the official source are on our Brazil tax-day page.
