What to know before you apply
PENDING RE-CHECK: this entry's source list predates the researcher's own correction pass and has not been re-verified. Chile has no digital nomad visa. The Servicio Nacional de Migraciones (SERMIG) lists exactly 15 subcategories of Residencia Temporal, and none covers remote work for a foreign employer: 1. Reunificación familiar; 2. Extranjeros que desarrollan actividades lícitas remuneradas; 3. Estudiantes de establecimientos reconocidos; 4. Trabajadores de temporada; 5. Extranjeros bajo custodia de Gendarmería; 6. Extranjeros en Chile por orden judicial; 7. Razones humanitarias; 8. Personas acogidas a acuerdos internacionales; 9. Personas religiosas de cultos reconocidos; 10. Extranjeros bajo tratamiento médico; 11. Jubilados y rentistas; 12. Ex titulares de Residencia Definitiva; 13. Inversionistas; 14. Permiso de negocios de múltiple entrada; 15. Mercosur (principio de reciprocidad internacional). Neither the subcategories page (updated 8 April 2025) nor the Residencia Temporal page (updated 16 December 2025) contains the words 'nómada' or 'remoto'. Closest routes: (a) Permanencia Transitoria — the ordinary tourist permit, which 'autoriza a permanecer por hasta 90 días en el país, plazo que se puede prorrogar hasta por 90 días más una única vez', with proof of sufficient means; (b) Residencia Temporal, subcategoría 'Personas que desarrollan actividades lícitas remuneradas' — but this is explicitly 'para extranjeros/as que desean desarrollar actividades remuneradas con dependencia de un empleador en Chile', so it does not fit someone employed abroad; (c) Residencia Temporal, subcategoría 'Jubilados y rentistas' — for those with a retirement pension or 'rentas constantes derivadas de la explotación de bienes raíces o activos financieros', i.e. passive income, not remote employment income. Residencia Temporal runs for a maximum of 2 years (except seasonal workers). Not verified: fee amounts for these routes (SERMIG publishes a separate 'Aranceles migratorios' section that was not opened), and any pending legislative proposal for a nomad category.
What it means for your tax days
A visa is permission to stay; tax residency follows the days. Chile treats you as tax resident once you are present 183 days Código Tributario article 8 No. 8, as replaced by Ley 21.210: a resident is anyone who stays in Chile, uninterrupted or not, for a period or periods totalling more than 183 days within any 12-month span. SII Circular N° 63 of 2021 explains that on completing 184 days of presence (exceeding 183), uninterrupted or not, in a period of 12 CONSECUTIVE MONTHS, the person is a resident FROM THE DAY the 184th day of presence is reached. The 12-month period is rolling ('móvil'), so the days must be assessed in each moving window; it is irrelevant whether they fall in the same calendar year., and residents are taxed on worldwide income. Days are not the only test: Domicilio is a separate and independent concept. With no tax definition, SII applies Código Civil article 59: residence accompanied by the real or presumed intention of remaining there. A person who establishes domicile in Chile is treated as domiciled FROM THE FIRST DAY OF ENTRY, with no day count at all. For acquisition of domicile SII weighs the ECONOMIC element (where the person carries on the activity from which they obtain most of their income, and where their principal interests or the principal seat of their business are located) rather than the family element, which is evidential only. An express sworn declaration of intent to remain in Chile establishes domicile from the first day of entry without further proof. Article 4 of the Ley sobre Impuesto a la Renta provides that mere absence or lack of residence in Chile is not enough to lose domicile if the taxpayer keeps the principal seat of their business in Chile, directly or indirectly. The full tests and the official source are on our Chile tax-day page.

How does Stretch help with the Chile stay?
Log the day you land and Stretch counts the days against the permission you are on, shows the date you must be out, and reminds you at 14, 7, 3 and 1 days. It also tallies the days that count towards tax residency, so the 183-day question answers itself. The counting and the alerts are free, forever.
