How we know

Every figure here is as igm.gob.gt publishes it, checked 18 August 2026. Where a number is our own arithmetic rather than a printed figure, the row says so.

Visa
Residencia Temporal — Nómada Digital (digital nomad temporary residence), Instituto Guatemalteco de Migración
Initial stay
12 months
Renewal
Reported as issued for 1 year and renewed annually, with validity options of 1, 2 or up to 5 years; time held counts toward permanent residence after about five continuous years of temporary residency. NOT verified against an official IGM publication.
Income required
$2,000 a month — Reported threshold for the remote-employee route: US$2,000 per month of verified remote income, rising to US$3,000 per month if dependants are included, attributed to Acuerdo IGM-016-2025. For the self-employed route no fixed statutory income figure is reported; applicants are said to have to show business registration and Guatemalan SAT tax registration (RTU) evidencing genuine business activity. SECONDARY SOURCE ONLY — see notes.
Who qualifies
Reported as covering two routes: (a) remote employees with a contract with a foreign employer doing fully remote work, and (b) self-employed people/freelancers with foreign clients, platform income or online businesses — in both cases the income source must be outside Guatemala, with no employment relationship with a Guatemalan entity and no Guatemalan-source income. Under the 2025 reforms all worker categories, including digital nomads, are reported to be exempt from the usual Guatemalan garante (local guarantor) requirement. No investment minimum. NOT officially verified.
Family
Family inclusion is reported to be permitted, with the higher US$3,000/month income threshold when dependants are included. Not officially verified.
Where to apply
Reported process: complete the IGM application forms available at igm.gob.gt and file in person at IGM offices (Subdirección de Extranjería, 6ta Avenida 3-11 Zona 4, Guatemala City), with resolution reportedly taking about 2–4 months. Not officially verified.

What to know before you apply

NOT CONFIRMED ON AN OFFICIAL PAGE. Guatemala does appear to have a dedicated digital nomad category (so 'none' would be wrong): multiple independent secondary sources agree it was created by Acuerdo Gubernativo 127-2024 and implemented by Acuerdos IGM-016-2025 and IGM-017-2025, going live on 8 October 2025. However igm.gob.gt is behind Cloudflare and returned HTTP 403 to every automated request, no usable archived copy of the IGM residency pages exists, minex.gob.gt and guatemala.gob.gt were likewise blocked, and the copy of Acuerdo Gubernativo 127-2024 hosted on demi.gob.gt is a scanned image PDF with no extractable text. The officialUrl given is the IGM portal, which could not be read. Every figure rests on secondary reporting and must be re-checked from a browser before publication. Closest verified-by-name alternative long-stay route: Residencia Temporal as a 'rentista' (stable foreign income/pension, no local job), also administered by the IGM.

What it means for your tax days

A visa is permission to stay; tax residency follows the days. Guatemala treats you as tax resident once you are present 183 days An individual is non-resident where present 'for a period not exceeding, in the aggregate, 183 days in any period commencing 1 January and ending 31 December' — so more than 183 aggregate days in the calendar year makes an individual resident. — though the system is territorial, so foreign income may fall outside it. Days are not the only test: An individual is also resident if their fixed place of business is located in Guatemala, unless they demonstrate otherwise with a tax certificate from another country. Guatemala's Ley de Actualización Tributaria (Decreto 10-2012) is the usual citation for the residency rules, including centre-of-economic-interests and family-based tests, but we could not verify its text. The full tests and the official source are on our Guatemala tax-day page.
