How we know

Every figure here is as eviza.mae.ro publishes it, checked 18 August 2026. Where a number is our own arithmetic rather than a printed figure, the row says so.

Status

Visa
Viză de lungă ședere pentru alte scopuri - nomazi digitali (long-stay visa for other purposes - digital nomads), symbol D/AS
Renewal
Long-stay D visa is the entry route; the right of stay is then extended by the Inspectoratul General pentru Imigrări (IGI). No renewal period is stated on the official MAE/IGI pages actually fetched — see notes.
Fee
€300 — Official MAE e-Visa fee table: "Long-stay visa (marked D) - 300 EUR". The same page states the fee was 120 EUR for applications before 27.04.2026 and 300 EUR from 27.04.2026. Charged in EUR, USD or local currency at the previous month's average exchange rate. This is the visa fee only; the separate IGI residence-permit fee is not published on the pages fetched.
Who qualifies
For people earning income remotely, via information and communication technology, from an employment contract with a company registered outside Romania, or from a company registered outside Romania that they own/run. Official supporting-document list (eviza.mae.ro) requires: employment contract or company documents evidencing remote work/management of a company registered outside Romania for at least three years; apostilled/superlegalised tax-compliance certificate; letter of intent; criminal record certificate from country of origin and residence; medical insurance of at least 30,000 EUR for the whole stay; proof of accommodation; travel documentation; passport valid 3+ months; two 3x4 cm colour photographs.

What to know before you apply

The programme is live and the digital nomad category is explicitly listed on the official MAE e-Visa portal under the 'other purposes' long-stay visa, symbol D/AS (not D/NM or D/AD as several secondary guides claim). The income test is a FORMULA, not a fixed number: 3 x the Romanian average monthly gross salary. Secondary sources disagree sharply on the resulting figure — variously 29,604 RON/month (~EUR 6,000), ~EUR 3,700/month, and ~27,600 RON/month (~EUR 5,400) — because they apply different base salary figures (INS monthly survey vs. the fixed gross wage in the annual social insurance budget law). No official page fetched publishes the resulting amount, so none is recorded. Duration is also unverified officially: secondary guides consistently say the residence permit runs 12 months and is renewable once (24 months total), but neither the IGI nor MAE pages fetched state this, so maxStayMonths/renewable are left null. A personal income tax exemption for digital nomads is widely reported but could not be confirmed on an official ANAF or MAE page, so no taxNote is given. IGI's English-language site has no dedicated digital nomad page; the Romanian-language IGI notice (published 4 July 2024) does cover it.

What it means for your tax days

A visa is permission to stay; tax residency follows the days you actually spend. Check Romania's tax authority for the day test that applies to you — and count the days either way.

Questions people ask about Romania

Does Romania have a digital nomad visa?

Yes. Romania runs the Viză de lungă ședere pentru alte scopuri - nomazi digitali (long-stay visa for other purposes - digital nomads), symbol D/AS (long-stay d visa is the entry route; the right of stay is then extended by the inspectoratul general pentru imigrări (igi). no renewal period is stated on the official mae/igi pages actually fetched — see notes.). Does a digital nomad visa in Romania make you tax resident?

A visa and tax residency are different things: the visa lets you stay, the tax rules follow the days you actually spend. Check Romania's tax authority for the day test that applies to you.

How does Stretch help with the Romania digital nomad visa?

Log the day you land and Stretch counts the days against the permission you are on, shows the date you must be out, and reminds you at 14, 7, 3 and 1 days. It also tallies the days that count towards tax residency, so the 183-day question answers itself. The counting and the alerts are free, forever.
