How we know
Every figure here is as thaievisa.go.th publishes it, checked 18 August 2026. Where a number is our own arithmetic rather than a printed figure, the row says so.
- Status
- Open
- Visa
- Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)
- Initial stay
- 6 months
- Renewal
- Multiple-entry visa valid 5 years from the issue date, giving 180 days of stay per entry. Each entry may be extended once at the Immigration Bureau for a further 180 days; after that the holder must leave Thailand and may re-enter on the same visa until it expires.
- Income required
- 500,000 THB a total — Not a monthly income test but a balance test. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs DTV sheet requires "Financial evidence: Bank statements for the past three months showing a balance of no less than 500,000 THB issued within one month". Some missions publish a local-currency equivalent; the Royal Thai Embassy checklist for Malaysia states "no less than 500,000 THB or (65,000 MYR)". Several missions additionally ask for "Proof of salary slip/monthly income for the last 6 months", but no monthly figure is published.
- Who qualifies
- Two qualifying purposes plus dependants. (1) "Workcation (digital nomad/ remote worker/ foreign talent/ freelancer)", evidenced by two or more of a certificate of employment and company registration, an employment contract, or "A professional portfolio showcasing digital nomad, foreign talent, or freelancer status". (2) "Thai soft power-related activities e.g., Muay Thai, Thai culinary training, and medical treatment", evidenced by proof of confirmation to attend the activity or a letter of appointment from a hospital or medical centre. Applicants apply from outside Thailand and must supply a document indicating their current location.
- Family
- "Spouses and children under 20 years old of DTV visa holders" may apply in their own right on the same 180-days-per-entry, 5-year terms, showing proof of relationship and the main holder's DTV approval.

What to know before you apply
Thailand runs two routes a remote worker can use, and this entry describes the dedicated one. The second is the Board of Investment's Long-Term Resident (LTR) visa, "Work-from-Thailand Professionals" category: personal income of "USD 80,000/year over the past 2 years", or "USD 40,000/year over the past 2 years + Master's degree, Intellectual Property ownership, or Series A funding of at least USD 1 million"; the employer must be "a public company listed on a stock exchange" or "a private company with at least 3 years of operation and combined revenue of USD 50 million in the last 3 years (a wholly owned subsidiary may use its parent company's financials)". It grants a 10-year renewable visa ("a 5-year stay or up to the passport's expiry date upon entry, which can be extended for another 5 years"), a 1-year rather than 90-day report, multiple re-entry, and "Tax exemption from oversea income". Visa fee "50,000 Baht per person" when collected at the Immigration Bureau at TIESC; insurance of at least USD 50,000 for no less than 10 months, or Thai social security, or a deposit of USD 100,000 per main applicant (USD 25,000 per dependent) held for 12 months. BOI document verification "takes 20 working days". The BOI's 2025 criteria update removed the work-experience requirement, cut the employer revenue threshold to USD 50 million over 3 years, added wholly owned subsidiaries, and removed the cap on dependants (now including parents and legal dependants). Note that the 17% personal income tax rate is a Highly-Skilled Professionals benefit and does not apply to Work-from-Thailand Professionals. Two DTV caveats for readers: fees vary by mission, and so do the supporting documents demanded — the Kuala Lumpur checklist additionally requires "Proof of prolonged residence in Thailand for at least 6 months, such as a condominium rental agreement, lease agreement etc.", which the Japan sheet does not. The 1,900 THB figure widely quoted for the 180-day extension could not be confirmed on an official Immigration Bureau page and is therefore not recorded.
What it means for your tax days
The DTV itself confers no tax exemption. Thailand taxes residents on foreign-sourced income remitted into Thailand; the separate LTR visa's Work-from-Thailand Professionals category does carry an official "Tax exemption from oversea income" benefit per the BOI's 2025 LTR brochure. No Revenue Department page was fetched for this entry, so no day-count threshold is asserted here. A visa is permission to stay; tax residency follows the days. Thailand treats you as tax resident once you are present 180 days More than 180 days in aggregate in any tax (calendar) year; the periods do not have to be continuous — though the system is territorial, so foreign income may fall outside it. Days are not the only test: No domicile or centre-of-interests test. Residence for Thai personal income tax turns solely on the 180-day count. The full tests and the official source are on our Thailand tax-day page.
